How Can NRIs Apply for a PAN Card Online – Complete Guide

Most NRIs find it hard to come back to India to do this process. However, one can apply for a PAN card online from anywhere around the globe.

The Two Official Websites For Applying PAN Card

The Income Tax Department under the government of India has given the right to accept online PAN card applications to;

  1. UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL)
  2. Protean eGov Technologies Limited (Protean)

So, Be aware of online scams that claim to be authentic PAN service providers.

The 10 Steps for NRI PAN Card Application

The application process in both UTIITSL and Protean follows the same steps.

In this guide, we’ll be showing the online PAN card registration process for NRIs through Protean.

Protean eGov Technologies Limited is the current rebranded version of NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure.

1. Visit the Protean PAN Services webpage

On the left-hand side of the page, click the ‘Online PAN Services’ drop-down box and select the ‘Apply for PAN Online’ option.

2. Enter your PAN application details

Choose the application type as ‘New PAN- Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ and specify the category as ‘Individual’. Then proceed to complete the remaining sections of the form accordingly.

3. Get your 10-digit PAN application token number

A dialogue box with your 10-digit token number shall pop up on the screen. Click the ‘Continue with PAN Application Form’ button. (You will also receive the token in your registered email. Later, you can log in conveniently with this token number and complete the form.)

4. Select how you want to submit documents and enter document details

As you enter Form 49A, select the mode of documentation, and PAN requirements in the ‘Personal Details’ section, and input Adhaar and parents’ details.

5. Add your contact & other details

Further, in the ‘Contact & Other Details’ section add your income details, address, and contact information.

6. Fill up the “AO Code” section

Next, in the ‘AO code’ section, enter your area code, AO type, range code, and AO number. (If you are unaware of your AO code, you shall be provided help within the form.)

AO refers to "Assessing Office". It is to identify the relevant tax jurisdiction of a person.

7. Upload proof of identity, address, and date of birth

Move on to the ‘Document Details’ section and enter appropriate document details, photo, signature, and complete declaration.

8. Complete the payment

Accept the terms and conditions and initiate payment. As soon as the payment is complete, the transaction status changes to ‘Successful’.

9. Re-confirm PAN application details

Authorize your PAN application by checking information, accepting terms and conditions, and entering the OTP. By completing this step your PAN application is authorized and completed.

10. Get your PAN card

Your PAN card shall reach you within 15-20 days at the registered mail ID or residence/office address as requested.
